An Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is a self-contained living unit ranging from 240sf-1200sf and usually detached from a primary residential dwelling. Attached ADUs are also know as JADUs (Junior ADU). ADUs are also commonly known as tiny homes, granny flats, in-law suites, casitas, or backyard cottages.

This distinction causes a lot of confusion: Tiny Homes are typically much smaller than ADUs, and are often mobile, though they can be built on a permanent foundation - same as an ADU.
Fun fact: we chose Tiny Home to include in our company name simply because of the term's popularity over ADU. 😊 But we focus on ADUs.

Bakersfield and the Kern County area allow up to 1200 square feet per detached ADU, as long as it fits on your property. There are different restrictions for Attached or JADUs, typically 50% of the primary residence.

Depending on the size it typically takes 3-5 months for plans and permits, and another 3-4 months for construction.
